about

When Empty Ensemble's Greg Bueno studied music in college, he was required to attend at least five concerts per semester, one of which would invariably be the Indonesian ensemble. The work of Yamashiro Shouji and Lou Harrison introduced Greg to the gamelan, an interest reinforced by Kawai Kenji and his score for "Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit."

"Pieces of June" uses samples of a Western orchestra and Balinese instruments to create a work that would be difficult to do live. Gamelan instruments are hand-made, making each ensemble unique. Tuning a symphony orchestra to a gamelan ensemble poses challenges that make such occurrences rare.

The world of sampled instruments makes it possible.
